History
Frank Didden established the University of Greenwich in the United Kingdom in 1890. It was then the second-oldest polytechnic in the entire United Kingdom and went by the name Woolwich Polytechnic. Quintin Hogg's ideas served as inspiration for Woolwich Polytechnic, which initially prioritized education together with social and religious obligations. By 1894, increased emphasis was placed on offering higher technical education. As a result, part-time day courses were developed in collaboration with the Ministry of War (Woolwich Arsenal).
As a result of a merger with a portion of Hammersmith College of Art and Building, Woolwich Polytechnic was renamed Thames Polytechnic in 1970. The following years saw the incorporation of Dartford College in 1976, Avery Hill College of Education in 1985, Garnett College in 1987, and portions of Goldsmiths College and the City of London College in 1988. After receiving government recognition as a university for the first time in 1992, Thames Polytechnic was finally renamed University of Greenwich.
In 1993, the University of Greenwich and Thames College of Health Care Studies officially merged to form a single faculty. In 1996, the university and the Natural Resources Institute (NRI), which had previously been a research arm of the UK government, formally amalgamated. The University of Greenwich is now considered as a distinguished modern public institution with campuses in London and Kent.
