Dr.George Birkbeck was the first person in London to recognise the need of working-class education. He gave a lecture on this subject on November 11th, 1823, in the evening, in front of hundreds of people. A politician, a philosopher, an educational reformer, and others were among those who attended the event.
On December 2, 1823, the London Mechanics' Institution was founded on the ideas of Dr. George Birkbeck. He desired that the working class learn fundamental science, art, and economics. However, he was not without controversy. He saw the need for proper education once more, and many donors and supporters rallied to support the university.
In 1830, Birkbeck became the first institution to admit female students. The Charter of the University of London resolved to hold degree examinations in1858. Students who lacked sufficient financial support for full-time study were encouraged to prioritise Birkbeck.
In 1920, Birkbeck became a member of the University of London (UK). It had opted to keep offering evening classes.
